In The Spotlight: NRG Contract Managers

NRG speaks to two of our long-time serving consultants, JG and UM who tell us what life is like as Contract Managers on site in Niger.

On duties…

JG: The Contract Manager works under the Site Management and is in charge of coordinating and managing the contract team by imposing strict directives and taking into account the Contract Administrators’ knowledge of the contract and of the contractors. We have to ensure that contracts are completed on time, with quality, and according to budget.

UM: Some of my duties include team coordination, calling for bids for small projects with local companies, correspondence writing, checking of monthly contractor invoicing, dealing with other project departments and client. I’m required to ensure that the project situation is always up-to-date.

Working style…

JG: The project is very intense and fast-paced and any difficulty could jeopardise the schedule and the budget. Due to the location, it is vital to be proactive and anticipate all difficulties to complete the works.

UM: At times, experience and skill are not enough to support the team as the challenges may alter from time-to-time. Difficulties on the project are mainly related to staff turnover due to harsh local conditions and huge load of tasks. One of the manager’s duties is to keep the team aware of the situation and encouraging them to find appropriate solutions.

Safety considerations…

UM: We co-operate with the HSE department by issuing contractual correspondence reminding contractors of their obligation on HSE rules. We also stop work when safety regulations are not complied.

Life at the site…

JG: Life here is a balance between hard day’s work and friendship with people from different nationalities. The base has a sport facilities with TV and WiFi networks to allow us to stay in touch with family and friends and have a good time after work.

NRG…

JG: NRG’s presentation of the project, their strategy and their contract were clear and they understood my requirements. The way NRG is organised gives to all of us the feeling that they know us personally and in the 10 months that I have been with NRG, they have indeed maintained this understanding.
